Ok, this is a very touchy subject for some people (no pun indented) Its Ok when your baby is a baby and the only person you have to mention ‘IT’ to is the Health Nurse or Paediatrician, but when he or she is old enough to ‘play with it’ – what then ??? Have you got my drift now? You see, I know every part of you body has a proper name, but please, am I the only one who thinks they could have come up with a better word than ‘penis’ or ‘vagina’? They’re like words you only use when you are at the doctor (right?). Now, before we go on can I just say, I am not a prude, and I am not self conscious, and neither is my better half, or the kids (actually sometimes I think the kids are too un-conscious of themselves!!)
Well our ‘name’ started years ago, when my brother (the first of 6) was born, and of course my sister and I were totally fascinated by my brother’s ‘little man bits’. Before my mother had time to answer our “What is that” question my father answered “That’s his widdler” (had he put some thought into this – who knows!). And so the tradition began, every Keenan born since has a ‘widdler’ (girl or boy) and to be fair, I think it’s an inoffensive name. Now I know some of you will be thinking ‘be more adult about this’ and my answer is, Ok so it’s his penis but when he has it in his hand at every opportunity (and you are wondering again is this normal) it’s easier to call it his ‘widdler’. Oh and by the way anyone who thinks the ‘playing with it’ thing is just a boy thing – oh no!! there’s full equality on this one!
We have had the proper name discussion in our house that is until I was asked
“…and does Daddy have a penis” …” “yes he does” (so proud of how this is going) and then the bomb “and does Granddad have a penis?” … Ugh – What – Ahh (Yuck – oh god, images… , can’t get the images out of my head) “Well actually No…” (what are you saying woman) “he has a m-m….he has a widdler just like you….”.(Ahh much easier to say!!!).
I know I fell at the first post – I don’t even want to think about how I am going to introduce ‘all the other stuff’ – Any suggestions?? Like I’ve said before we don’t have a ‘college fund’ we have a ‘Therapy fund’
